How and Why Do Double Standards Matter for International Law?

Was the project’s largest convening, drawing an international group of scholars alongside legal practitioners, diplomats, legal advisors, and others to examine how double standards are produced, contested, and “weaponized” across domains ranging from conflict and accountability to trade, sanctions, climate, and institutional practice. The programme featured a keynote conversation between Naz Modirzadeh (Harvard Law School) and Danilo Türk (former President of Slovenia), alongside high-level diplomatic discussions held under the Chatham House Rule and dedicated diplomatic panels. The conference was co-sponsored by the Geneva Graduate Institute, Harvard Law School’s Program on International Law in Armed Conflict, and the Nathanson Centre (Osgoode Hall Law School).
