Panel at the Canadian Council on International Annual Conference

Friends or Frenemies: Canadian Council on International Law Annual Conference

Friends or Frenemies? Canada, the International Court of Justice, and Alleged Double Standards examined Canada’s engagement with contemporary human rights litigation before the ICJ, focusing on how legal consistency interacts with diplomacy, strategic interests, and evolving interpretations of international law. The panel compared Canada’s interventions in Genocide Convention cases involving Myanmar and Russia with its more restrained approach to South Africa v. Israel and explored what might explain these differing postures.
